Mrs Juliana Ewing (1841-1885)

Mrs Juliana Horatia Ewing (née Gatty) was the author of many articles and books for children, including three illustrated by Randolph Caldecott:

Jackanapes (1883)
Daddy Darwin's Dovecot (1884)
Lob Lie-by-the-Fire (1885)

Each of these first appeared in serial form in Aunt Judy's Magazine, which had been founded by Mrs Ewing's mother, Mrs Gatty.

Another book of hers, The Brownies and Other Tales (1879) provided the characters who were used as the basis for "The Brownies", the junior branch of the Girl Guide Association.

Mrs Ewing and Randolph Caldecott corresponded frequently, as they discussed illustrations for her books and, interestingly, ideas on what system of royalty payments should be agreed with their publisher.  Their correspondence, from 1879 until Mrs Ewing's death in 1885, is reproduced in Michael Hutchins' book "Yours Pictorially", where it occupies 61 pages.
